CLINICAL SCHOLAR TRAINING PROGRAMME

Combined 4-year Residency and Masters Programme in Infectious Disease/Veterinary Public Health

Graduates in veterinary medicine, preferably with at least one year of post-graduate experience, are invited to apply for this combined Scholarship and Master’s degree by research. The clinical and research component of this Residency training programme is being offered in conjunction with the Veterinary Diagnostic Service (VDS) Infectious Disease laboratory. The research project will focus on the application of molecular markers to establish the genetic diversity and transmission routes of the enteric protozoan parasite Giardia. This will be undertaken in collaboration with researchers from the Institute of Biodiversity Animal Health and Comparative Medicine. The taught component of the Residency, on which the student will be examined, will be in the area of veterinary public health, focussing on the sub-specialty of population medicine. Learning opportunities will be provided in global veterinary medicine, zoonoses and infectious disease, quantitative methods in veterinary epidemiology together with methods in surveillance and field investigation. This will be provided by partner institutions including Health Protection Scotland (HPS), Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC), University of Strathclyde, the Institute of Aquaculture (Stirling University), the University of Edinburgh and the Scottish Microbiological Reference Laboratories.

Applicants must be a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, or hold a veterinary degree qualifying them for membership. Candidates will be expected to sit examinations of the European College of Veterinary Public health (ECVPH), and to undertake a Master’s degree by research (MVM). The training programme requires participation in the Department’s clinical services, in addition to small-group teaching of veterinary students. Scholarships are renewed annually, subject to satisfactory progress. Initial stipend £19,250 (PAYE exempt), the stipend rises to £20,800 by the fourth year. £1,500 per annum is available for attendance at conference(s), examination fees and externship costs.
